  Maintenance

After you have installed your low voltage lighting system, there is very little maintenance that needs to be done to keep it running smoothly.

Keeping The Fixtures Clean
Low voltage lights occasionally need to be cleaned to remove dirt, leaves and other debris that accumulates on lenses and fixtures.  when you clean floodlight fixtures, consider changing lenses to give your yard and home a fresh new look.

Corrosion and Lubrication
To avoid problems caused by corrosion, remove all lamps from their fixtures once a year and spray the sockets and contact points with silicone-based spray.  Most floodlight fixtures have a hole in the back of the lamp housing that acts as a drain.  If the drain is continually clogged, make the hole slightly larger or drill a second hole for better drainage.

Prune Branches and Foliage Near Lights
For maximum light output, light fixtures should not be covered by foliage, tree branches or bushes.  Check the fixtures periodically to see if nearby foliage needs pruning.  If fixtures are mounted in trees, the branches may need to be pruned, too.  After pruning, the lighting fixtures may need to be readjusted slightly to eliminate glare and achieve the desired lighting effect.  For tree installations, inspect the cable at least once a year for wear and to be sure the cable is not fraying near the connection points.  Ground level fixtures may get out of adjustment from time to time, too.  Check these fixtures periodically and readjust them if necessary.

Replacing Bulbs
One of the most common questions about low voltage lights is, "How long will the lamps burn, and when must I replace them?"  Low voltage lamps are designed for long life.  Since most low voltage lamps operate at less voltage that their capacity (due to voltage drop), actual bulb life may be significantly longer.  When a bulb burns out, replace it immediately.  As bulbs burn out, the output voltage of the transformer rises slightly.  This higher voltage will reduce the life of the remaining bulbs.  If excessive blackening of the bulb is noted, replace it with a fresh bulb.
